Nurse Becomes First to Find Property through Council’s New Market Rent Lettings Agency
A local nurse and her two young children are settling into their home in Leyton this week, after becoming the first residents to find a property through Waltham Forest Council’s new market rent lettings agency for key workers.
Last month Waltham Forest Council launched its new Lettings Waltham Forest service, working with local landlords and agents to offer good quality, suitably priced accommodation to key workers in the borough – including those in the emergency services and childcare, healthcare and education professionals.
Marveline Powell, an anaesthetics nurse who works at Whipps Cross Hospital and Royal London Hospital was referred to the service as she had been unable to find a good quality three-bedroom home locally. Now thanks to the Lettings Waltham Forest team she has been able to find a three-bedroom property that is close to her children’s school and other local facilities.
Commenting on her experience of using the new service, Marveline said: “The Lettings Waltham Forest team were fast and very accommodating, going out of their way to set up evening viewings for me and even dropping the keys to my new home off to me at work! The website was also very easy to use and I was able to select properties I was interested in right away. I have now found a home which is close to my children’s school and just a 10 minute drive to work.”
Properties available for rent via the new agency can be viewed online now at www.lettingswalthamforest.co.uk/properties-to-rent/. Properties will be available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, and are available to key workers exclusively for the first seven days.
Cllr Khevyn Limbajee, Cabinet Member for Housing said: “I am absolutely delighted that Marveline has been able to find a property with Lettings Waltham Forest, and hopefully she will be the first of many residents that we are able to help through the scheme.
“We recognise the vitally important role that our key workers play in keeping our city running, so we want to ensure they are able to find good quality, affordable homes in the borough. We understand that letting a property can often be a risky and complicated businesses, so we are keen to work with responsible landlords in the borough as we continue our campaign to drive up property standards in Waltham Forest.”
All properties made available through the scheme will be offered at market rent prices or lower. Other benefits for renters include zero tenant fees, deposits secured by a government-backed deposit protection scheme.
The benefits for landlords include no set-up fees in the first year, full management, rent collection and let only services, thorough tenant checks and cash incentives up to a value of £750 which can be used to cover the cost of the private rented property licence.
Landlords will also have access to a range of other commercial services offered by the Council, such as pest control and large item collections.
